Man, I really struggled with identifying a research topic for our Action Research Plan.  I will be going back into the classroom this year (after being a Specialist for two years) and I am feeling so overwhelmed with everything that will be on my plate.  My campus is really pushing several initiatives this year AND our Principal is very anxious about the STARR as we did not do as well as she had expected.  Therefore, I want to focus my efforts on researching a topic that is meaningful to both myself and my campus.  I feel like I have narrowed it down to the use of common assessments and PLCs.  Is anybody else overwhelmed?

  1. I think you are exactly on point with focusing on the power in which a common assessment can be in identifying objectives to focus on for improvement. I also think the POWER of a PLC is yet to be discovered!!!! I would LOVE to see what you can do to combine the two...however...as two separate topics you are on the right track!!!!

  2. These are both great topics, but implementing a PLC can be a huge undertaking. Either is sure to give you great results. I too agree that the power of a PLC is slowly being recognized. My school recently became apart of TAP - The system for teacher and student advancement and when reading about a PLC it sounded a lot like what we have been implementing on my campus through TAP. I think common assessments would also be worth action research. If these were teacher created assessments created collaboratively it could create a community of collaboration and lead to a PLC. Just some things to think about. Either way both are worth of action research. ~Good Luck

  3. I will be a second year teacher this year and I am definitely feeling your anxiety of being overwhelmed. A lot of things are still new to me and now I feel a lot of pressure with my internship on my plate as well but I know that I can do it. You will be just fine too. Take a deep breath and know that you will get through this and be better for it!
